Fabian Cancellara time trialed to bronze in Copenhagen at the 2011 World Time Trial Championships. Tony Martin (Germany) set a blistering pace that proved unbeatable for Cancellara today. A late race bobble in one of the final corners cost Cancellara the silver medal, which went to Bradley Wiggins (Great Britain). Cancellara covered the 46.4 kilometer course in 55:04, 1:20 down on Martin.
“I’m not a robot,” said Cancellara. “Bad days happen. I was ready, but when I started, I felt like it wasn’t the right day for me. Martin was super strong and absolutely deserves the win.”
The four time world time trial champion and defending gold medalist took to the start house determined to battle.
“I haven’t got any regrets,” Cancellara commented. “I was ready. The legs were there. It simply didn’t go how I wanted. C’est la vie.”
Cancellara was bested by Martin from the start. He was second to the German at the first intermediate time check.
