You don´t have to compete in triathlons to appreciate swimming, biking and running. They aren´t only the component of the actual sport of triathlon but are also the athletic mix of the perfect summertraining!
Triathlon is probably a scary word for a lot of people and for some it´s synonumous with the daunting Ironman; a 3.8 kilometre swim, a 180 kilometre bikeride and a full marathon of 42 kilometres to run.
It´s too bad that this imageproblem is associated with the sport since a triathlon can be a lot shorter and a lot more accessible for the average weekend warrior. Most races are between one or two hours and you don´t need to be a fully committed athlete to conquer these. Furthermore; one don´t need to race triathlons to actually enjoy the crosstraining that goes with it!
Imagine a beautiful summer evening and you plan to do a nice jog with your friend around your favourite lake. Why not leave the car at home and make training a little more fun? Ride your bike to the lake and do your normal run. Once you´re finished with that you´ll surely be sweaty and warm and the lake looks great for a swim! So you jump in and swim back and forth for a little while and cooling off at the same time. When you later get back on your bikes for the ride back home you can congratulate yourselves for having had a great triathlon workout with more fitness than from a single sport session and having had loads of fun at the same time!
Working out like a triathlete might also entail splitting up the weekly routine in one or several sessions of swimming, biking and running. And why stop at that? Throw in some kayaking, rowing, in-line skating, roller skiing, hiking or some yoga for total fitness. The choice is yours; your summer triathlon as many different components as you want. With enough variation your training as a triathlete won´t ever get boring or old and you´re less likely to burn out, get injured or hit a fitness plateau. And who knows, maybe the next step isn´t all that far away? After all, how hard can one of those local triathlons be? You´ll only find out be signing up!
