Eneco Tour's 204 kilometer long fifth stage between Roermond and Sittard-Geleen contained hills, also found on the route of the well-known Amstel Gold Race, and a trio of Sergio De Lis (Euskaltel), David Deroo (Skil-Shimano) and Jens Mouris (Vacansoleil) was not slow to slip away in a morning breakaway.
They obtained a lead of more than 17 minutes before the peloton woke from their sleep and a group of fifteen riders, among others Team Saxo Bank's Lars Bak and Jurgen van Goolen started the pursue of the front group. With forty kilometers to go the two groups emerged and the chasing peloton was barely one minute behind.
The gap was only thirty seconds as the front group was six kilometers from the line. On the last five kilometers Team Saxo Bank rider, Lars Bak took off and went solo towards the finish line. And using his good TT-abilities he kept everyone behind and took a beautiful stage victory.
