Francisco Jose Martinez Perez (Andalucia-Cajasur), Tom Leezer (Rabobank), Dominik Roels (Milram), Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoliel) and David Garcia, Since Pena (Xacobeo) seized the opportunity early on the second and 203 kilometer long and in particular flat second day of the Vuelta. The organizers might have had more than a good imagination to help finding a suitable location for settling today's mountain points since the riders moved more than 20 meters above the water surface. But somehow they succeeded, and Tom Leezer (Rabobank) is now the happy leader of the mountain competition after passing “the top” first.
The quintet was making an effort trying to deny the sprinters their obvious chance to take the stage victory on the flat stretch between Assen and Emmen, Holland.
But the Team Saxo Bank riders lived up to their responsibility and moved to the front to minimize the gap before the sprinter teams took over to put their stars in a good position. But already thirty kilometers from the finish line several riders were being dropped. The narrow roads and harsh cross winds created serious gaps in the peloton shortly before the riders took on the 1500 meter cobblestone road. Unfortunately, Team Saxo Bank rider, Fränk Schleck was caught behind a pile-up of riders and he had to fight alone to make it back to the peloton who was now chasing the lonely Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoliel) in the front.
But the course ended with the expected mass sprint, where Gerald Ciolek (Milram) was the fastest rider and took the stage win.
Team Saxo Bank rider, Fabian Cancellara now leads the race with an eight second gap in front of Gerard Ciolek (Milram).
